Nursing Point-of-Care Tools: CAUTI Prevention

Purpose

• Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the fourth most common type of healthcare-associated infection.
• Almost all healthcare-associated UTIs are caused by instrumentation of the urinary tract, usually by means of a Foley catheter.
• Each day the Foley remains, a patient has a 3% - 7% increased risk of acquiring a catheter-associated urinary tract infection, or CAUTI. 
• A CAUTI should be considered a “never-event”.  The Ascension WI CAUTI workgroup has assembled the following resources below for CAUTI prevention.
