A 'preceptor' is described as one who teaches, supports, counsels, coaches, evaluates, serves as a role model and aids in the socialization to a new role. The preceptor also guides the new associate into the real world of clinical practice allowing them to preform new skills while gaining confidence and validation.
A preceptor is expected to have the following characteristics:
We recognize that the preceptor role can be a difficult and challenging role as you are trying to balance may other responsibilities with the responsibilities of being a clinical preceptor and recognizing that every associate is different, both in terms of background, experience, and level of understanding as well as personality and learning style.
During this workshop, we will review the qualifications and responsibilities of the clinical preceptor, including the preceptor's responsibilities for assessment and documentation of the new associates performance. We will also meet to discuss challenges encountered in the clinical setting and role-play possible solutions. Contact the Nurse Educators if you would like to attend the next Virtual Preceptor Class.
